Knaresborough Town Centre

Our town is packed full of history! Knaresborough has been around since the first century AD. Knaresborough Castle dates back as far as 1100 AD, in the midst of Norman rule. It was around this time that the town began to grow, with a thriving market that attracted shoppers and traders from far and wide.

Market Square

If you fast forward a few centuries, how we do life has changed significantly, however the Market Square is still the thriving heart of Knaresborough! So much life goes on here through independent shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs, and a range of businesses and services.

A weekly market is been held on Wednesdays, as it has been since medieval times, complete with Roger (our Town Crier) keeping everyone updated with Knaresborough news and events.

More recently The market square has been home to events such as the Knaresborough Christmas Market, the Knaresborough Nativity play, musicians, artists and entertainers linked to the Knaresborough FEVA Festival, and events such as the Spring Fayre, organised by the Knaresborough Business Collective.

With all this (and much more!!) going on in our town, shopping locally and supporting our local economy has never been more important.

The Castle and beyond…

The site of the 12^th century Castle, built on a promontory over the Nidd Gorge offers breath-takingly scenic views (Viaduct selfie anyone?!). Steps lead down to the Waterside Nidd River Walk, which, in turn, extends through the Nidd Gorge to Abbey Road in one direction, with a host of exquisite carvings from living trees, and woodland clinging to the steep-sided valley.

Walking along Waterside (if you haven’t already) is a must, this naturally beautiful spot is healing for the soul! There are also boats to hire if you fancy, and a number of fantastic restaurants and cafes to enjoy.

Facing across the Nidd, Mother Shipton’s Cave is a forested theme park which encompasses the Petrifying Well, England’s oldest visitor attraction.
